Mold & Insect Problems Reported in Williamson County

Black Mold Reported in Williamson

Mold, insects, and rot are the three major problems that could be brought on by having synthetic stucco installed on your home’s exterior. Last week we told you about how these issues have been reported throughout Williamson County. We received a lot of feedback from readers about this story. Many of you wanted to know how to tell if this product is installed on your home.

The easiest way to figure out if you have synthetic stucco is to simply knock on the outside of your home’s exterior. If the noise you hear sounds solid then chances are you have real multi-layer cement siding. If your knock produces a hollow sound then you probably have an exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS) installed on the outside of your home.

EIFS is just another term used in the housing sector to describe the use of synthetic stucco. A layer of foam is adhered to the structure’s frame. Then a coat of stucco is painted on top and voila – you’ve got synthetic stucco installed on your home.

If you’ve knocked all over the outside walls of your house and still can’t come up with a definitive answer, there’s another simple test you can try. Firmly press your thumb against the wall. If the facade gives way or if you can feel a slight indent in the area where you pressed then you are likely dealing with synthetic stucco.

If you still don’t feel comfortable with the result of these tests or if you’ve figured out you do in fact have synthetic stucco siding, it’s time to take action. This even applies to those of you who now know you have EIFS installed but can’t point out any problem areas.
