MLB’s New Pace-of-Play Rule Noticeable?

We’re less than a week into the 2015 Major League Baseball season and the league’s new pace-of-play rule is already noticeable.

In many situations it’s noticeably funny – like this at-bat with Adrian Beltre of the Texas Rangers caught by CBSSports.com’s Matt Snyder.

One component of the new rule prohibits the batter from stepping out of the batter’s box between pitches unless he hits a foul ball.

It’s good to see that Beltre can get a laugh out if now, because MLB’s warning phase will run out soon. The league has already sent out 10 letters to violators, warning fines will begin shortly according to an MLB spokesman.

Other key features of the new rule inforce play to begin promptly after commercial breaks and less time in between pitches.

No word yet on how many minutes the new rule is saving. If the year’s first Red Sox vs. Yankees game is under three hours, we’ll know it’s working.
