Maury County Public Schools students– the ones who don’t have the flu, anyway– got some good news Tuesday when the district announced it will close to prevent sickness from spreading.

Superintendent Dr. Chris Marczak announced that the district will be closed Wednesday through Friday; students were due back from winter break on Wednesday.

‘I have been in contact with MCPS’ consulting physician, Dr. Steven Smith,” Marczak wrote. “Dr. Smith has alerted me that Maury County is experiencing a severe Influenza Type A problem.’

Smith said that one-third of the patients he has seen during the last two weeks had the flu.

Given the high incidence of flu in Maury County, as noted by Smith, and in the mid-south, as reported to the Center for Disease Control, Marczak decided to close all schools in the district through Friday. Smith felt that if students came back as planned on Wednesday there would be widespread communication of the virus.

Smith told Marczak that he believes the “disease will plateau at the end of the week and that [Maury County Schools] should be in the clear by Monday.’

As for MCPS’ neighbor to the north, Williamson County Schools Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney said that the district is not considering closing.
