Matilda Lotz Painting Comes Home

The Historic Lotz House museum in Franklin has been gifted another painting by the late artist, Matilda Lotz, who grew up in this historic home.  Black Sheep is the 6th painting to be returned to the house collection. It was framed by the house builder Johann Albert Lotz.

The anonymous gift comes from a foundation member in the San Francisco area. “While the painting is spectacular, it’s the frame that makes this particular piece even more special.  The frame was hand carved by Matilda’s father Johann Albert Lotz and features a rams head on either side of the top of the frame.  To have another piece of wood work back in the house in Franklin that Lotz built is remarkable,” said Lotz House Executive Director J.T. Thompson.

The work was completed by Matilda when she was 18, back in 1876. “We are very excited about the painting as it will be the most current of Matilda’s works in the Lotz House collection. This is historically important to us because we can see how her talent matures with her age,” continued Thompson.
