“This is a very scary situation for dog owners and is indicative of the problems that are coming to light in commercial dog foods,” says Leslie Kessinger, co-owner of Three Dog Bakery in Franklin. “There are poor food safety standards in place at many large producers that cause contamination and  the development of pathogens.”

Kessinger says premium dog food brands are very open about their safety practices and rigorously test its food before it leaves their facility for sale. “Champion Pet Foods, for example, holds bags of dog food in their facility until the results of their testing clears the product for sale,” she notes. “This is a preferred method over testing product after it’s left the facility or not testing the product at all.”
