Dr. Mike Looney

In a short rescheduled meeting Thursday night, the Williamson County Board of Education gave Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney a four-year contract extension in a unanimous decision.

The board voted 12-0 in favor of extending Looney’s contract through Jan. 17, 2022.

The vote came after the board officially recognized an evaluation by Looney, participated in by all the board members. Looney received a score of 4.64 out of 5 on a scale from 1 (Unsatisfactory) to 5 (Exemplary).

“I’ve never claimed to a be a perfect administrator, I always have room to grow, but I am particularly proud of the work we have done together,” he said.

Chairman Rick Wimberly, 9th District, made the motion for the contract extension.

He said in the face of “unprecedented financial challenges, in addition to the fact that’s Dr. Looney has done a good job in his tenure here, I believe that he is up for the challenge for us to deal with these problems and challenges we have ahead.”

Looney began working for the district in December 2009. His contract extension of four years is the longest allowed by state law. Last year his contract was extended through 2021.

His evaluation was similar then, a 4.65 out of 5.

He currently makes approximately $260,000 per year.

In 2015, he turned down an offer to become superintendent of the Metropolitan Nashville School District.
