Longtime Franklin Road Academy (FRA) baseball coach George Weicker died Sunday after a battle with pancreatic cancer.

A Baltimore native, Weicker began his Nashville baseball career as a member of the original Nashville Sounds team in 1978. When his playing career ended in 1981, Weicker joined the Vanderbilt baseball staff for five years. After his time at Vanderbilt, Weicker moved to Franklin Road Academy in 1986, where he began to build the Panthers into a baseball dynasty. The Panthers won the state championship in 1988 and 2000, finished as state runners-up in 1999, 2001, and 2015, and a state semi-finalist in 1986. Over his 35 years as head coach, Weicker amassed more than 600 wins for the Panthers.

Weicker, a former college football player as well, also coached the Panthers football team for 20 years. During his time on the football sidelines, FRA went 150-80 and won the school’s only football state championship in 1991.

Just over a year ago, Weicker was inducted into the Tennessee Baseball Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame.

Weicker is survived by his wife, Lucy, and children, Woody and Libby. Funeral arrangements are currently pending.
