Cougar nation mourns the loss of Gary Clevenger, 69, a vital supporter of the Cougar Athletic Club and a substitute teacher, who died suddenly on Monday.

“Gary was a valuable member of the CHS community and even more vital to our athletics department,” Wade Privett, CHS athletic director, wrote in a tribute. “He was always willing to jump in and take the reigns anytime someone needed help which was evident as he oversaw all concessions operations for Centennial despite his children having graduated years earlier.”

Clevenger’s wife of 37 years, Paula “Bay” Watson Clevenger, teaches health sciences at Centennial and is the head coach of the bowling team and girls’ lacrosse. He had two daughters, Rebecca Clevenger and Emily Clevenger Valadez, who also teaches and coaches at CHS, and a son, Dr. Aaron Clevenger.

Like many of us, Clevenger was a transplant. He grew up in Michigan, coming to Tennessee to attend MTSU and later UT Nashville. He became an engineer for UPS.

His funeral mass will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 26 at St. Phillip Catholic Church. Father Bala will be the celebrant.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Special Olympics, Centennial High School, 5050 Mallory Lane, Franklin, TN 37067.
