In a matchup of two Miss Basketball finalists, Brentwood Academy’s Sydni Harvey was able to best Baylor guard and Vanderbilt signee Kaleigh Clemons. The Lady Eagles were able to runaway late en route to a 72-56 win.
The Lady Eagles and Lady Red Raiders would trade the lead 10 times throughout the game. BA went 44% from the floor in the first half, while Baylor would hit on 46% of their shots. In the second half, the Lady Eagles adjusted their defense, holding Baylor to less than 37% shooting in the second half. At the same time, the BA ladies hits better than 71% of their attempts.
The BA girls were able to dominate the inside, both in scoring and rebounding. BA outrebounded Baylor 27-20, which created a 13-0 second chance points advantage. Overall, the Lady Eagles outscored the Lady Red Raiders by a 32-16 margin in the paint.
Sydni Harvey was named tournament MVP once again. She finished the championship game with 24 points, 3 rebounds, 1 assist, and 1 steal. Harvey was one of four Lady Eagles named to the All-Tournament team. Harvey was joined by Breuna Jackson, Bria Dial, and Makaila Wilson. In the championship game, Dial stepped up in her post position, scoring 15 points and pulling down 6 rebounds.
“We had a target on our backs this year,” said senior Breuna Jackson. “It was hard getting the first and second one. It was tougher getting the third one. We had to fight through it.”
Head Coach Rhonda Brown said, “We weren’t getting back in the first half. We were giving them easy baskets. If we could just get back and get our defense set, we known them real well and [our] kids know how to guard them.”
Much like the Brentwood Academy boys, the BA girls return much of their team next season. While they lose guards Anna Stephens and Breuna Jackson, the Lady Eagles return their Miss Basketball and MVP Sydni Harvey, along with Bria Dial and Makaila Jackson.
