Kroger Getting Ready for Wine!

Kroger- and other grocery stores- are about to start selling wine. Last week at its large Germantown, Tennessee location, the grocery store chain showed off how it is going to work when, on July 1st, stores across the state open with wine in its aisles.

Wine, at Kroger at least, will have its own section. But it will also be on display throughout the store at appealing places, to promote food pairings and potential specials. Something to think, about, especially with the new “Super” Kroger that just opened in Brentwood. Here are five things to know about that store.

At the event at the Germantown store, four wine distributors were there to talk about their wines- Star/Glazer’s, West Tennessee Crown, Athens and Delta. Athens will supply Bay Bridge wines, which cost as low as $2.99.  But high-end wines will also be sold, even Cristal, according to Star/Glazer’s.

“We just want to give you an idea of what it’s going to be like for a customer…come July 1,” Randall Melton, a vice president at Kroger, told the Commercial Appeal.

Look for wine in the bakery, seafood, floral/gifts, and of course, around the cheese counter.

Stores that have Murray’s counters will even have a cheese master, trained to select wines and pair them with cheeses and meals.

The preparation will begin next month, when stores will start stocking wine and hiring additional employees for the new Kroger adult beverage department. One thing to note, however, is that Kroger and other stores, unlike liquor stores, will not be allowed to offer wine tastings.
