June is Great Outdoors Month – Deerwood Arboretum

June is Great Outdoors Month Series Part 1

Make plans for the first weekend of June and visit Deerwood Arboretum in celebration of Great Outdoors Month. This fine local destination is a beautiful place to walk, ride bikes or sit and enjoy a quiet picnic. The covered pavilion allows you some respite from the summer sun.

A walking trail that leads to the Little Harpeth River is my favorite part of this 27 acre natural area. The park features bikeway and jogging trails, ponds, a wildflower meadow and a Nature Center Complex with an outdoor classroom. There are also restrooms, information kiosks and a small amphitheater. An educational curriculum is available for use by schools and service groups. The shelter at Deerwood Arboretum and Natural Area can be reserved only by local schools; boy and girls scout groups, etc., for educational purposes by contacting the Parks and Recreation Department at 371-2208.

Deerwood features more than 69 different species of trees and a guide for you to use to identify and find them. 320 Deerwood Lane in Brentwood is the hiding place for this gem of preservation. On the ride up through the neighborhood be on the lookout for the local red fox that is often seen playing in the large yards just outside the park. The park is open dusk to dawn.
