Joy of Food: Brixx Wood Fired Pizza

by Serenity Joy Miller

I have been enjoying the pizza and beer at Brixx Wood Fired Pizza since they opened several years ago, and I have never been disappointed with the food, beer options, or friendly service. And Monday night was no exception.

brixxWhen I walked up to the bar, I was excited to see that the bartender was my good friend John Smith. We were able to catch up a little bit, and he provided excellent service throughout my dining experience. After I finished my first beer, a deliciously strong porter from Founders Brewing Company, I asked John to suggest a lighter beer. He gave me a sample of the Indian Brown Ale from Dogfish Head, and it was exactly what I was looking for – slightly sweet, malty, and smooth. John is very knowledgeable about the beer he pours and the food he serves.

Speaking of the employees, manager Mark Hamner uses a friendly, hands-on approach to connect with his customers. He constantly walks around the dining room to make sure each guest is happy and satisfied, and he checks in with the kitchen frequently to make sure everything is running smoothly. With hospitable, accessible employees like Mark Hamner and John Smith, I believe that Brixx is fulfilling their desire to become “your neighborhood place.”

brixx-2Now, let’s talk about the food! I ordered the Bruschetta appetizer, which was absolutely scrumptious. The savory mixture of marinated roma tomatoes, sundried tomatoes, a few small pieces of onion, and fresh basil gave this appetizer a juicy, complex texture, which complemented the soft, thick focaccia bread perfectly. Topped with fresh, creamy housemade mozzarella and a balsamic glaze, each ingredient was able to pop with its own natural flavor, while blending with the other ingredients to create an exceptional taste experience.

Twenty-three unique wood fired pizzas are listed on the menu, and they all look amazing. I’ve ordered several different pizzas in the past, including the Americo, Greek, Bronx Bomber, Margherita, Buffalo Chicken, Barbecue Chicken, and 4×4, and they have all been quite tasty. I decided to go with the Rustica on Monday night, which is one of my favorites. The Rustica is a very well-balanced pizza flavor-wise. The deep flavors of earthy mushrooms and roasted garlic come together with savory kalamata olives and tangy artichoke hearts to create a delightful combination, which is only improved by the fresh mozzarella and thinly sliced prosciutto on top.
