On Saturday, May 18, Dillard’s at the CoolSprings Galleria is attempting to break a Guinness World Record.

Recognizing that May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month, Dillard’s is attempting to break the world record for the most people applying sunscreen at the same time.

All participants will receive a free, personalized sample of sunscreen while learning the importance of protecting their skin from sun damage. The event will be held at center court on the lower level next to California Pizza Kitchen beginning at 11 am, with the record attempt at 1 pm. The event will be held at 15 select Dillard’s locations across 11 states.

According to the Guinness World Record website, the current record holder is Ann’s Hope Foundation who had 1,822 people simultaneously apply sunscreen on May 18, 2014.

With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States stated the Skin Cancer Foundation. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. About 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. By raising awareness of the dangers of unprotected exposure and encouraging sun-safe habits, we can change behaviors and save lives.
