Jackman Still Strong In ‘The Wolverine’

“The Wolverine” marks Hugh Jackman’s sixth portrayal of the mutant Wolverine. After all these years, Jackman’s  still got it!

This installment of the X-Men franchise takes a serious look at who The Wolverine/Logan is.

In an interview at this year’s Comic-Con in San Diego, Jackman said “’The Wolverine’ isn’t just another sequel in the long-running ‘X-Men’ franchise….This movie is not wall-to-wall mutants. You don’t have people flying around, changing colors or shooting lasers out of their eyes. It is very human.”

This quote is the perfect explanation of this film. Yes, it has superhero components to it. The Wolverine is still fighting bad guys and using his terrifying claws to cause some serious damage and other mutants make appearances but the film’s focus is Logan’s inner turmoil.

Logan experiences many flashbacks in this movie and one of the most prevalent is the bombing of Nagasaki, where he saves a young officer named Yashida. Fast forward many years—Yashida is the owner of a very powerful corporation in Japan and he is dying. He has asked Yukio (a young girl who has been part of the family for years) to track down Logan. After searching for him for a year, she finds him in bar, starting a fight and brings him to Japan.

Yashida offers Logan a way out of his mutant problems. He offers him mortality and wants to transfer Logan’s mutant powers to his own body. Logan is offended and uncooperative, which is not taken well by Yashida.

Yashida, as well as other members of the family, are consumed with greed. Yashida wants life everlasting and his son wants the Yashida corporation. Unfortunately, the company has been given to his granddaughter, Mariko, who soon finds herself the target of a massive manhunt.

“The Wolverine” is a beautiful film to watch. The cinematography moves from the busy streets of Tokyo to the snow capped hills of North Japan to small peaceful towns.

If you’re a fan of the X-Men movies, this is a no-brainer. This is a fun, entertaining, summer movie that delivers everything viewers love about The Wolverine.

Keep your eyes out for the next X-Men movie titled “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” scheduled to be released summer 2014.
