Independence High School freshman Lukas Byrum has an eye for design, something he proved when he won the grand prize for this year’s Tennessee Youth Art Month flag design contest.

The competition was split into four levels: primary, intermediate, middle and high school. A winner from each level was chosen, and then an overall winner was selected for the grand prize.

Lukas created his flag design based on the theme “Building Community Through Art.” His flag will represent Tennessee at the National Art Education Association conference in Seattle from March 22-24.

Lukas will also receive $1,000 in prize money, and $1,500 in art supplies will be given to the Independence High art department.

“Lukas is a freshman and is already accomplishing great things in our art department,” said IHS art teacher Andrea Howard. “His design represents Tennessee, and it also represents building community through art in such a joyful way. It is exciting for him to be recognized for something he loves to do.”
