Independence will face a huge obstacle this Friday as it travels to face undefeated Overton this Friday in round two of the 6A playoffs.

The Eagles won a decisive 35-25 round-one victory over Rossview High School behind a strong passing night from quarterback Andrew Bunch, who has started every game since he replaced former starter Caleb Hollis against Franklin High School. Bunch completed 12 of 19 attempts for three touchdowns.

Tennessee commits Vic Wharton III and RaShaan Gaulden had outstanding nights for the Eagles as well against Rossview. Wharton rushed 12 times for 63 yards, caught two passes for 66 yards and threw a 37-yard touchdown pass, all while returning a fumble for a touchdown on defense.

Gaulden, meanwhile, caught six passes for 194 yards and three touchdowns.

Independence will need all the offense it can get against an Overton offense that has scored at least three touchdowns in each of its 11 wins this season, and the Bobcats won’t be slowing down after a 30-0 opening round victory over McGavock.

Overton’s offensive strength has by far been in its running game. Aside from Justin Martin–is by far the Bobcats’ biggest offensive threat–Overton has two other capable backs in Kimlee North and Ugo Amadi should Independence find a way to stop him. That, however, is unlikely, has rushed 260 times for 1,745 yards and 25 touchdowns.

Friday’s game kicks off at 7 p.m.
