And the first IKEA store in Tennessee goes to Memphis. While many in our area make treks to Atlanta for their IKEA trips and there even is a local company willing to make your IKEA haul for you if you are willing to pay a small fee. At one point, there was a Facebook page dedicated to Bring IKEA to the Bellevue Mall. But on Tuesday, there was a press conference in Memphis with an announcement that the first IKEA in Tennessee will be built in Memphis.
The new IKEA store in Memphis is set to open in fall of 2016. According to the Memphis Daily News, Mayor Wharton spoke on Tuesday stating that IKEA executives formally announced at a city hall press conference that the Memphis store will be located at interstate 40 and the Germantown Parkway exit that borders the interstate.
Smaller than most IKEA stores at 259,000 square feet it will be built on 35 acres with 1,000 parking spaces. In addition to retail space, it will also feature a restaurant.
So, does this mean that our area will not see an IKEA since the Swedish based retailer is known for not overpopulating areas with their stores? Only time will tell if IKEA will come to the mid-state. In the mean time, dust off those blue suede shoes and get ready to shop!
