How Exercise Can Relieve Pain

Studies show that people with regular exercise routines can better manage their pain than people who do not exercise on a regular basis. While every person is different and all of our needs will differ, exercise offers many general benefits that help relieve and reduce pain.

Pain Threshold
Having a regular workout routine can lift your pain threshold so that your body is less sensitive to pain in general. Stretching, cardiovascular training, and strength training exercises all improve your pain threshold because they get your body used to feeling less comfortable. With a higher pain threshold, you are less likely to feel everyday aches and pains

Injury Pain Relief
If you have suffered an injury, it is very important to get guidance from a professional before beginning an exercise routine. However, many people do feel relief from injuries once they begin working out again. Kristi Ensminger, the manager of the Franklin Athletic Club (FAC), says, “I have a slight tear in my meniscus that I got while playing basketball with some guys during my military training at the end of last year. It bothered me a lot for a couple months, to the point that I was finally going to resign to seeing a doctor about it. Just about that time, I started working at FAC, so I started lifting weights and running more. Before I knew it, I was experiencing zero pain when I bent my knees or squatted on the ground, basic movements that had caused me pain previously.” A doctor or physical therapist will be able to give you a proper assessment to find the plan that is right for you. It is important to remember that every person’s body is different and that your plan should be tailored to your body.

Flexibility
When you become more flexible, you are less likely to feel tightness in your muscles, therefore you will have less pain after a stressful day at work or a rough workout in the gym. Stretching helps you relieve pain immediately after a workout and helps prevent injuries from even occurring. Stretching also helps you feel more relaxed throughout the day, so you are less likely to have that annoying shoulder pain or crippling lower back pain.

While everyone’s body is going to react differently to exercise, many people find that working out acts as a wonderful pain reliever. Being healthier and more active can not only help you relieve some of your pain, it can also help prevent long-term chronic pain in the future. Pain relief is just another of the many benefits to beginning a regular exercise routine, and it may be one of the most important for some.
