Battlefield Park

On Tuesday, Franklin BOMA passed a resolution agreeing to contribute $1.5 million over seven years to purchase a list of properties that the Battle of Franklin Trust and Franklin’s Charge will turn into Carter Hill Battlefield Park.

On Thursday morning all parties signed the papers at city hall and the purchase of 1.6 acres that were part of the battlefield in the 1864 Battle of Franklin became official.

All the properties are along Columbia Avenue just north of downtown Franklin.

The city will pay $214,285.71 every February 15 to the battlefield organizations to pay for the property starting on Monday through 2022.

The eight properties can be seen on the map below:

“It was the most important piece of civil war battle field that had not been preserved,” Eric Jacobson, CEO of Battle of Franklin Trust, said at the signing.

“It is like a section of the beach at Noramndy that had houses, pizza places and strip malls on it.”

“If we had worked like we did 150 years ago like we did on this project we might not have even had a war,” he said of the cooperation between public and private, local and national entities involved in creating the park and preserving the battlefield.

All told its is a $27 million project with $15 million coming from private donors and $12 million coming from public institutions , like the city of Franklin.
