Playoffs Explained:
The whole playoff system is kind of confusing, and not really explained anywhere simply. So here goes:
Division I is for the most part public schools. Division I is broken into three classes by size (more As more students), Class AAA (biggest schools), Class AA (middle-size schools) and Class A (smallest schools). Each class has its own playoffs and state championship.
A class has 8 Regions and a Region has 2 districts, so 16 total.
At the end of the regular season, each district plays a tournament to crown a champion. The top four finishers in the tournament qualify for the regional tournament. So, really, you have 64 schools in each class (8 from each region, 4 from each district) making the regional tournament. The eight teams from the two districts in a region play a three-round tournament to determine the Regional champ.
Then they throw a wrench into things by playing something called a sectional round. Instead of taking the eight Regional champions and moving straight to an Elite Eight/quarterfinals round for the State title, the runner-up from each Region plays the winner of another Region. So the winner of Region 1 plays the Runner up from Region 2, while the runner up from Region 1 plays the winner from Region 2, and so on. The field goes from 64 (Regional Quarterfinals) to 32 (Regional Semifinals) to 16 (Regional Finals) to 8 (8 Regional Champs crowned) to 16 (8 Champs play 8 runners up in Sectionals) to 8 (State Quarterfinals) to 4 (State Semifinals) to 2 (State Championship) to 1.
Division II, the private schools, is a little more straightforward since it has far fewer teams. We will address that in our DII bracket post.
