Harpeth River Lowhead Dam Breaking

Lowhead-Dam-Break

History will fall on Wednesday, July 25 at 11 A.M. when the City of Franklin and the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation begin demolition of the City’s Harpeth River Lowhead Dam. Removal of this barrier on the Harpeth will improve fish habitat and water quality. This project will also improve public access and provide recreational opportunity for fishing and paddling.

Lowhead Dam Project

This project was named in the “2012 Ten Waters to Watch” list by the National Fish Habitat Partnership, and the Department of Interior named it as a model of America’s Great Outdoors River Initiative. The initiative is to conserve and restore key rivers across the nation while enhancing recreational and community needs. The total cost for this effort is $870,000 and should be complete in the fall of 2012.

The Harpeth River Watershed Association is installing a “Dam Cam” that will tape the entire demolition process. Go to www.harpethriver.org/damcam to view the recording. The area is off limits during demolition so the only way to watch the progress is online. Water recreation and canoe/kayak launch is also prohibited during this process.
