Harlinsdale Farm Hosts International Cup

Franklin Polo

Top arena polo players from across North America will be at the Park at Harlinsdale Farm on Friday evening, with USA squaring off against Mexico in a twilight match being dubbed the International Cup. The first ball drops at 6:15 p.m. in the Tractor Supply Co. Arena, and tickets are only $10 at the door. Children under 10 are free.

“These matches are a lot of fun for kids and adults, and we love seeing families in attendance. We cater to children and beginners who are interested in learning more about the game or just enjoying a very competitive match,” said James Armstrong, director of the Franklin Polo Academy. “Children can meet the players, see the horses up close, practice striking the ball with the mallet from our wooden training horse, and participate in fun games in between chukkers. It’s a great way to spend a Friday evening with your family.”

The concessions stand will be offering a full selection of items from the grill, along with salads and sweets. Beer and wine are available for purchase, and VIP cabanas offer a more upscale menu and experience. Details can be found at the Franklin Polo website.

The Mexico team, sponsored by RS Lipman, will feature players such as Emmanuel and Armando Huerta and Ramon Acuna, who spend winters playing in Florida and are fixtures in the polo pony training world. On the USA side, with the team sponsored by Crain’s Nashville, attendees can expect to see favorite players like Stevie Orthwein, George Hempt and Jamey Parker in the match.

“People can expect to see top-quality arena polo players and horses competing in an adrenaline-filled match, in a relaxed environment that is geared toward learning and enjoying the game,” Armstrong said. “This match will include four 7.5 minute chukkers, or periods, and we tend to see a lot of goals and a close score all the way to the finish.”

Arena polo features two teams comprised of three players each competing in the 300’ x 150’ arena. Each team member plays both offense and defense. Horses and players are often rotated between chukkers.

This is the last match of the summer season for Franklin Polo Academy, who will launch a Sunday brunch series of matches in October. The Academy offers polo lessons for people of all ages and skill levels, with a focus on beginners.
