“Hands on History” Takes Children Back in History

What was life like during the Civil War? What did people do for fun? How did they make their food?

All these questions and more will be answered in the Carnton Plantation’s class series “Hands on History,” a monthly program dedicated to educate, as well as entertain children with history lessons.

Beginning in April, The Carnton Plantation will showcase various aspects of life in the 1800s. Each month, children can participate in a one hour class learning and experiencing life as it was lived during the Civil War era.

Upcoming classes include: learning about the craft of pressing plants, visiting the slave quarters and learning about slave life, getting 1860s fashion advice (and even playing dress up), seeing and making antique toys, visiting the Carter House kitchen and learning about making real biscuits and butter (and snacking on some as well), and so much more!

Cost for each class is $10 and is from 9:30am-10:30am. Classes are designed for children 5-10 years of age. Please visit  or call 615-786-1864 for a detailed schedule. Reservations must be made.
