Halloween Treats Your Dog Will Love

It’s Halloween – and your dog wants to celebrate just like everyone else. Some treats, however, are better for your pup than others.. For example, dog treats made from wholesome, natural ingredients are easier to digest and healthier for your pup. According to the Whole Dog Journal, “Organic ingredients are good; they are less likely to be adulterated with contaminants, and they receive extra scrutiny from inspectors. The more organic ingredients, the better.”

Healthy Dog Treats:

  • Sam’s Yams Dental Chewz: “This is a great dental chew and we only recommend the sweet potato kind,” says Leslie Kessinger, co-owner of Three Dog Bakery in Franklin. “It’s a great source of fiber.”
  • Three Dog Bakery Pumpkin Wafers:  This grain free treat is great tasting and grain is excellent for dogs with sensitive stomachs, according to Kessinger.
  • Bixbi Hip & Joint:  “This treat comes in salmon or beef and includes a medicinal level of glucosamine and chondroitin,” notes Kessinger.
  • Orijen Freeze-dried Raw Treats: These treats are pure protein (grain free/no other ingredients).  “They come in single protein or mixed protein varieties — like Tundra.  Dogs love them and they are appropriate for all diets,” says Kessinger.
  • Bark Pops: Kessinger recommends these crunchy, tasty treats and notes that they are also super low-calorie.  “They are great for dogs trying to lose weight,” she says.
  • Three Dog Bakery Duck & Chicken Wafers, & Jerky:  These soft, meaty treats are grain free, contain a simple list of ingredients and include digestive support, like cranberries and carrots says Kessinger

Whole Dog Journal also advises to avoid giving your pup treats that contain artificial preservatives (this includes ingredients like BHA, BHA, BHT, ethoxyquin, potassium sorbate, sodium nitrate (which is used as a preservative and for coloring), and calcium propionate.
