Haiti-Focused Nonprofit Opens Franklin Office, Participates in Art Scene

Danita’s Children is a 501(c)3, nonprofit organization that rescues, loves and cares for orphaned and impoverished children, is celebrating its new local office in Franklin with a ribbon cutting on Thursday and a spot on the Franklin Art Scene tour on Friday.

Founded by Danita Estrella Watts in January 1999, the organization began with a small house and 14 children. Currently, Danita’s Children has more than 100 orphans in a facility in in Ouanaminthe, Haiti, a school and a medical center.

The organization launched 16 years ago in Orlando, Florida, and now has its stateside headquarters in Middle Tennessee.

The public is welcome to attend the ribbon cutting celebration for Danita’s Children from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Thursday at 201 5th Ave. S. in Franklin, at the corner of 5th and Church.

From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Danita’s Children will exhibit images by humanitarian photographer Lacey West during the last Franklin Art Scene of 2016. West recently returned from Haiti. Her work is described as stories of love, hope, resilience and empowerment.

Danita’s Children also will showcase the work of artist and musician Jon Reddick. His art is described as a reflection of his passion for music and African American History.
