Gwyneth Paltrow on Design, GOOP, and New Product Line

Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth Paltrow was the keynote speaker for the opening of the Antiques and Garden Show in Nashville. Paltrow, along with designer Windsor Smith talked about the landscape of design ,business and beauty, all which fit perfectly with the theme of this year’s Antiques and Garden Show—Landscape of Design theme.

Windsor Smith, founder of Windsor Smith Homes and author of Homefront: Design for Modern Living, and self proclaimed lover of antiques opened the informal panel by saying,”Hi Ya’ll. I knew I was in a great place when we drove up to the hotel and the bakery on the corner says, we serve biscuits all day.”

Paltrow and Smith met while Paltrow was looking at a home in Los Angeles, a home that Smith had designed and it was across the street from his home. Their love of design connected them and a fast friendship began.

When speaking about design both Paltrow and Smith talked about how they approach a room when it comes to layout. Smith said, “It’s organic, it’s intuitive. I think of it in terms of where everyone is going to sit. I even take notes on how they dress including how their family interacts.”

“I fall in love with a piece of furniture first”, says Paltrow. “Often in design it comes to functionality because our house in London had a room that we didn’t use very much so I turned it into a jungle gym room for our kids.”

GOOP, which Paltrow launched in 2008, started out as an e-mail newsletter and grew into a website offering advice on recipes, health, fitness, and mindfulness. The popularity of GOOP has even included a pop-up store in different cities across the country.  Paltrow shared the next GOOP pop-up location is slated for San Francisco. However, Paltrow asked the audience, “Should we bring our next pop-up to Nashville?” Paltrow is friends with singer-songwriter Holly Williams and added “Holly, said we could take over White’s Mercantile [Holly Williams’ store].”  White’s Mercantile has two locations, one in the 12 South neighborhood in Nashville and the other in downtown Franklin– perhaps we could have two GOOP pop-up stores?

Just announced a couple of weeks ago, GOOP is launching a skincare line. Paltrow shared how she was asked to be the Creative Director for Juice Beauty. And now GOOP will have its own skincare line called GOOP by Juice Beauty to be released in March. Paltrow said she wanted a cosmetic line that worked and while other natural products didn’t have chemicals in them, they often don’t work. “We absorb 60 percent of what we put on our skin, my daughter Apple is now using lotions and creams and I want to know what she is actually putting on her skin.”

One question Paltrow fielded from the audience was what would be your ideal day? Paltrow replied,”It would start with sleeping late and being somewhere with the kids where we could all relax. And of course great food and wine.”

The Antiques and Garden Show runs through Sunday, Feb. 14 at the Music City Center in Nashville. Tickets are  available online or you may purchase in person at the show. Hours of the show are 10am-7pm on Saturday and Sunday from 11am-5pm.
