Big plays came early and often for the Battle Ground Academy Wildcats (4-0) Friday against the Westview Chargers (0-4).

The Wildcats’ quick-hitting plays came not through the passing game, but on the ground. They averaged 9.1 yards per rushing attempt in their 31-10 win, gaining 237 yards on 26 carries.

BGA’s leading rusher was Kel Hawkins, who ran just four times but racked up 138 yards (34.5-yard average). He scored on carries of 64 and 80 yards and also added six catches for 49 yards.

Jaylen Frierson added into the rushing attack with 12 runs for 88 yards and two touchdowns, one of which came from 41 yards out.

Quarterback Drew Martin also put in an efficient game through the air, completing 20 of 25 passes for 185 yards.

The Wildcats’ defense, which has only allowed nine points per game this season, was also impressive by limiting Westview to just 150 yards of offense. Julian Craig led the way with 10 tackles and two tackles for loss.

With the win, BGA stays undefeated on the season going into its Week 5 matchup on the road against the University School of Jackson (3-1). The Bruins beat Jackson Christian 40-13 Friday.

Last season, the Wildcats took home a 20-7 road victory against USJ to begin their season 5-0.
