Grassland Middle School has a new leader. Superintendent Dr. Mike Looney has named Darren Kennedy as principal. Kennedy is the Executive Principal of McKissack Middle Prep in Metro Nashville Public Schools.

“Darren is an instructional leader who has an excellent grasp of differentiated learning,” said Looney. “He has high expectations for students and staff; he is a great fit for Grassland; and I am glad to have him join our team.”

Kennedy has worked in Metro Schools for the past nine years. In addition to McKissack, Kennedy has served as an assistant principal at both Whites Creek and Maplewood high schools. He began his career as an elementary teacher in Asbury Park, New Jersey where he spent five years in elementary education.

“I’m excited for the opportunity to work with the students, parents, staff and all stakeholders at Grassland Middle,” said Kennedy. “I look forward to helping students excel in a global society, to advance academics and to foster a positive social emotional culture. My goal is to meet the needs of all students and personalize their learning experiences.”

Kennedy said he hopes staff members, students and parents will drop by the school and introduce themselves before the start of the new year.

Kennedy holds a Bachelor’s in Journalism from Howard University; a Master’s in Administration and Supervision from Tennessee State University; and he is on track to complete his Doctorate from Tennessee State University in December. He will begin his new role July 1 and will be at the school beginning July 5 where he’ll have the opportunity to meet staff members.
