Just down from Maryland Farms are two great locations for summer fun or a lunchtime excursion. The first is Granny White Park. It is perfect for the kids with a huge play area and lots of room to run and frolic. The Rotary pavilion is a cool respite from the hot summer sun. Bocce ball courts, athletic fields, lighted tennis courts and trails abound at this 32 acre haven beside Brentwood Middle School.

If you prefer to be a little more out of the city as I do, then you won’t want to ignore Deerwood Arboretum. The 27 acre Tennessee State Certified Arboretum is a perfect place for a picnic, a stroll through the woods or an energizing bike ride. More than 69 species of trees fill the wooded landscape and amenities include biking and jogging trails, a wildflower meadow and a nature complex with outdoor amphitheater.

Bordering the Little Harpeth River, this escape from the bustle is worth the drive through neighborhoods to the top of the hill. Wild animals are often seen frequenting the grounds including a large adult Red Fox. For tree lovers, many are tagged and a trail guide is available online.
