Gracious Spaces: Creating a Master Bedroom Retreat

by Jennifer Ingram owner Gracious Spaces, Interior Design and Staging Company in Brentwood.

Your master bedroom should always feel like a retreat . . . a serene place to escape the stresses and obligations of the day. However, the bedroom is often times the most overlooked space in our homes. But there isn’t enough time, money, or energy to spread around everywhere, right? Our main living spaces just seem to take precedence sometimes. Well, let me encourage you to realize the importance of loving your bedroom again and its effect on your quality of life.

I believe a relaxing, beautiful bedroom sets the tone for the day as well as a peaceful evening – it’s the place that we associate comfort and rest. There are so many budget-friendly ways to add charm and warmth without breaking the bank. Choosing the right paint color builds the foundation of a space. A soothing, classic wall color adds a timeless backdrop for any furniture or textile changes you make over the years. Think light tans, grays, soft blues, and greens to give your bedroom that luxurious, serene feel.

Determine if your furniture style, flow, and arrangement are working for you. Don’t be afraid to break away from the predictable “bedroom suit.” These days, we see painted furniture mixed in with other pieces adding both contrast and interest. Another way to update traditional furniture (and save big bucks!) is by purchasing new bedding that can transition over the years. New decorative pillows, throws, accent rug, and bed tray instantly refresh a room. Lighter accessories spread throughout the space will also soften and brighten darker wood furniture bringing a fresh appeal to your bedroom.

Mix in an architectural piece like tin, metal, or reclaimed wood along with traditional art. Remember though, avoid crowding every wall with a piece of art, photos, or architectural elements. The eye needs a place to rest as it scans over a space. Less is more when it comes to a master bedroom. Adding new lamps or even updated shades is another great investment and will literally shed years off your bedroom. And if I may be brutally honest . . . retire that dusty, old ivy or messy houseplants. Instead, opt for natural, flowy stems or arrangements that don’t scream “I’m artificial!”

Pretty glass bowls, vases, filler, books, clocks, lanterns, and natural elements are great accessories that add layers of personality and subtle beauty. Don’t forget to incorporate something reflective like a curvy mirror, chandelier, or mercury glass to bring a sparkly touch to your bedroom. And most importantly, there are NO rules in decorating. Surround yourself with the things you LOVE and you will never be disappointed!
