Franklin’s defense held Centennial’s powerful offense to just 162 yards, and running back Matt Gaca ran for 210 yards and a pair of scores, leading the Rebels to a 28-14 home win.
The Rebels, who held Centennial star Jariel Wilson to 97 yards of total offense, became the first team to hold the Cougars under 26 points this year.
After a scoreless third quarter, Franklin extended its lead to 28-7 on Gaca’s 12-yard touchdown run with 10:01 left in the game.
Franklin recovered its own kickoff at the Centennial 40 to start the night, then, ran the ball on seven straight plays, scoring on Josh Nichols’ 1-yard run with 8:20 left in the first quarter.
After Rebel safety Chapman Beaird recovered a fumble, Nichols hit Chancellor Bright with a 31-yard scoring strike with 21 seconds left in the quarter.
Thirty-four seconds later, Centennial quarterback Grayson Marcel connected with Wilson on a 45-yard touchdown pass.
Gaca had a 10-yard scoring run with 1:07 left in the first half, helping the Rebels to a 21-7 halftime lead after Ian Burr’s extra point.
Nichols was 7 of 10 passing for 75 yards. The Rebels had 321 yards of offense.
Guy Lipscomb had a second-half interception for Franklin, and Khani Kelton had 2 1/2 tackles, with 1 1/2 for loss.
Both teams were heavily penalized. Franklin was flagged 13 times for 115 yards, while Centennial had six penalties for 65 yards.
Centennial (3-4) faces Hillsboro at Vanderbilt next Saturday, while Franklin (4-3) visits Oakland.
