Saferide4kids.com reports that 72% to 84% of families do not install their car seats properly or use the wrong car seat for their child. The most common forms of misuse are using the wrong seat for the child’s age and weight, loose safety belt attachment to the car seat and loose harness straps on the child. The scariest part? An astounding 96% of parents believe their child safety seats are installed correctly. Meanwhile these misuses increase a child’s risk of injury during a crash.
Bring your child and his or her current car seat to the Free Car Seat Check event Saturday, June 11th at 10am at Franklin Fire Station 1, 500 New Highway 96 West.
Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians will be on hand to answer your questions and make sure your child is safe in the car.
This event is hosted by the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt, Safe Kids Cumberland Valley and the Franklin Fire Department.
Those who cannot make it to the event can contact the Franklin Fire Department to schedule an appointment with one of their 17 technicians at 615-791-3270.

There are many car seat choices on the market. Use the information below to help you choose the type of car seat that best meets your child’s needs.
- Select a car seat based on your child’s age and size, choose a seat that fits in your vehicle, and use it every time.
- Always refer to your specific car seat manufacturer’s instructions (check height and weight limits) and read the vehicle owner’s manual on how to install the car seat using the seat belt or lower anchors and a tether, if available.
- To maximize safety, keep your child in the car seat for as long as possible, as long as the child fits within the manufacturer’s height and weight requirements.
- Keep your child in the back seat at least through age 12.
