school headerWith the rain and the mud, it was never going to be pretty.

But Friday night when Franklin (2-2) traveled to Brentwood (1-3), somebody had to win.

The teams combined for seven fumbles, but run offense and bruising defense pushed the Rebels past  the Bruins, 21-13.

Rebels running in the Mud

Franklin, coming off a district loss to Overton, beat up Brentwood on the ground, running for almost a hundred more yards. The Rebels rushed for 228 yards on 53 attempts for a 4.5 yard per carry average, while the Bruins gained 134 yards on 30 attempts for 4.5 yards per carry.

Lannom Craddock had 114 yards on 29 carries and Kyle Evans had 70 on 13 for Franklin. Evans added 58 yards and a touchdown on 6 of 8 passing. Clearly, calling runs on 53 of its 61 offensive snaps, Franklin coach Donnie Webb looked at the weather and the wet, muddy field and decided it was going to play good, old-fashioned smashmouth football.

Rebel junior cornerback Zach Polisky returned a fumble 30 yards for the first score of the game Brentwood, looking to win its second straight game, went into half down just 1 point.

The Bruins quarterback Carson Croy (12-25, 102 yards, 11 carries, 45 yards) responded with a drive that put Brentwood in field goal range. Tucker Day hit from 42 yards out, getting the Bruins on the board, 7-3.

Later in the half Day booted a 47-yard field goal after Brentwood recovered a Franklin fumble.

The Rebels defense shut down the Bruins in the third quarter. Bruin running back Ahmad Arnold lost a fumble to Rebel Teshawn Jenkins 23 yards from the end zone. Evans found tight end Mitch Rossi for a 13-yard score after a short drive, putting Franklin up 14-6.

Franklin then forced a Bruin 3-and-out.

Taking just two minutes off the clock, the Rebels put together a 71-yard drive that Matthew Burns (8 carries, 62 yards, TD) ended with a 3-yard touchdown run. Less than four minutes left in the third, Franklin led Brentwood 21-6.

Arnold (13 carries, 55 yards, TD) made it a 21-13 game with a 5-yard score three minutes into the fourth.

Brentwood had a last chance with two minutes left, driving into Rebel territory, facing fourth and 4.  But the Franklin defense held, stopping a run by Croy short to shut the door for good.

Brentwood hosts Region 7-5A opponent Dickson County.

Franklin goes back home next week, hosting Region 3-6A opponent Ravenwood, which lost to Centennial Friday night.
