From Metro Police Department

The 23-year-old skateboarder critically injured Friday night at the intersection of Broadway & 4th Avenue after colliding with a minivan is identified as Norman Stevenson of Franklin. He is being treated at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.

Stevenson was riding a skateboard south on 4th Avenue at 7:30 p.m. when he collided in the intersection with a Toyota Sienna minivan driven by Ashraf Khalil, 47, of Mt. Juliet. The minivan was stopped in the intersection waiting for heavy congestion to clear in preparation to turn left onto Broadway from 4th Avenue South.

The contributing factor to the collision appears to be Stevenson’s failure to obey a traffic control device in that he did not have clearance to enter the intersection. Moreover, state law states that play vehicles, such as roller skates, coasters and similar items are not allowed on any portion of a highway or roadway within a city or town.
