Three Franklin retailers are teaming up with the Franklin Fire Department to help promote home fire safety during Franklin’s annual “Smoke Alarm Discount Day,” which will take place Saturday, November 14. Harpeth True Value (Downs Blvd.), Home Depot (South Royal Oaks Blvd.) and Lowes (Mallory Ln.) will discount smoke alarms by 20 percent. Franklin Firefighters will be at participating stores to answer customers’ questions from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event coincides with a time when there is an increased risk of home fires – the holiday season. “The first line of defense in the event of a home fire is a working smoke alarm,” said Franklin Fire Marshal Andy King. He added, “Working smoke alarms cut your risk of dying in a fire in half.”
According to the National Fire Protection Association, half of home fire deaths result from fires that occur between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m., when most people are asleep. Meanwhile, three out of five fire deaths result from fires in homes with no smoke alarms or no working smoke alarms. King said, “Smoke alarms can alert you to a fire before it spreads and give you enough time to get out.”
King recommends installing smoke alarms in every bedroom, outside each separate sleeping area, and on every level of your home, including the basement. Larger homes may need more alarms. He said if your smoke alarms are more than 10 years old you should replace them. The date they were made should be stamped on the back.
