Franklin Photographer Documents Gatlinburg Fire Aftermath

Franklin photographer, Jeremy Cowart, who has photographed Taylor Swift, Garth Brooks, and the Kardashians is now photographing the aftermath of the wildfires in Gatlinburg.

Cowart wrote on his Facebook page:

“Over 2,000 homes and businesses burned and 14 people passed away. As I sat there, I had an idea and typed it out… “Mattress and Drone”. I randomly had the idea to place a stark white mattress in the middle of these destroyed homes. Then I wanted to place the home owners on the mattress and photograph it high above from a drone and allow them to share their stories and their current needs. I figured the moment would also be a bit therapeutic for them… laying down in their old home for one last time. I’ve decided to call it “Voices of Gatlinburg” or #VoicesofGBurg for short.”

Cowart has spent the last few days documenting the destruction and sharing more about those who once lived in the now destroyed spaces. With each story, he also shares a Go Fund Me page where you can help each individual monetarily.

The Mayor of Gatlinburg, Mike Werner, lost his home and business. On Cowart’s Facebook page, Werner’s daughter Tess shares about her family’s loss.

“To some this is Mike Werner, the Mayor of Gatlinburg (standing on what’s left of his own home). But to me he is dad. My dad is one of the greatest men I have ever known. Growing up if I ever needed anything my dad was ALWAYS there for me. Being one of seven, my dad has always made sure we know we are loved. The other night at dinner he told me if he did not have Christ he does not know how he would be getting through this. My dad has shown great courage through his loss. He has put the community before grieving his loss. He has visited those who were displaced to spread hope and remind them it’s going to be ok. He has bravely shown his faith. My dad is a rockstar.” – Tess Werner

Below is the drone footage where Jeremy shot photos of the Werner family.
