FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The man fatally injured in Sunday’s 10:20 p.m. two-vehicle collision in the 200 block of Haywood Lane is identified as Ramon Alberto Lopez, 74, of Franklin, Tennessee.

Lopez was driving his 2009 Nissan Versa southbound on Haywood Lane when, while negotiating a sharp curve, he crossed into the northbound lanes of travel and collided head-on with the driver of a Toyota Camry. Lopez, who did not appear to be wearing a seatbelt, was transported to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he died. The driver of the Camry, Clemente Banegas, 63, was not injured.

According to a witness, just before the crash Lopez leaned over to the passenger side as if he was retrieving something from the passenger side floorboard. Banegas reported that he did not see the Camry’s headlights. Roadway evidence suggests that Lopez may have been driving without them on.

There was no evidence of drug or alcohol involvement at the scene. Toxicology testing will be conducted on Lopez to determine whether drugs or alcohol played a role in this fatal crash.
