Frank Wycheck announced on 104.5 The Zone on Wednesday morning that he will take 2017 off from being the color analyst for the Tennessee Titans games.
Wycheck confirmed his taking a leave from the broadcast this year to TitanInsider.com in a text message.
The Titans sent out a statement and announced that former linebackers coach Dave McGinnis, will fill in this year. The team had also had conversations with former left tackle Brad Hopkins regarding being a possible replacement.
“After multiple discussions with Frank (Wycheck), it was agreed that he will take this season off from the radio broadcasts and return next season. With the season quickly approaching, we have reached an agreement with Dave McGinnis to fill-in for Frank this season. Coach Mac has a deep knowledge and passion for the game, along with eight years as a coach with the Titans. He is very excited about taking on this role and we think he will fill in admirably,” the statement said.
Wycheck, a former star tight end for the Titans, is best known for throwing the lateral to Kevin Dyson in the Music City Miracle. He been bothered for several years by issues from concussions that harken back to his playing days. He missed a road game last November in San Diego after sustaining a concussion from a fall.
Wycheck has been the Titans color analyst since 2005, teaming with long-time play-by-play voice Mike Keith on the broadcasts for the Titans Radio Network. In the past several months, Wycheck has opened up occasionally to speak about his health issues and the fears that he might have CTE, which is caused from repeated head trauma. A number of former pro football players have been diagnosed with CTE after their brains were donated to science following their deaths.
