Former Titans Kicker Rob Bironas Dies in Car Accident

Tennessee Titans fans and the organization woke up on Sunday morning to the sad news that former kicker Rob Bironas had died in a car accident on Saturday night in Nashville.

Bironas, 36, lost control on a curve in his 2009 GMC Yukon Denali and crashed after 11 p.m. less than a mile from his home in the 800 block of Battery Lane Metro Nashville Police said in a statement.

The SUV traveled off the right side of the road and struck a line of trees before it came to rest upside down in a large culvert area. Bironas was transported by ambulance to Vanderbilt University Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. The crash occurred less than a mile from Bironas’ home, where he is believed to have been heading. There was no evidence of alcohol or drug involvement at the scene.

The Titans, who play at Cincinnati, issued a statement Sunday morning:

“We are deeply saddened to hear the tragic news from last night about Rob Bironas. Rob made a significant impact as a player in his nine years with the team and more importantly touched many lives in the Nashville community off the field.”

Bironas joined the Titans in 2005, and he will probably be best known for making a franchise-record 11 game-winning field goals during his career, including one of 60-yards over the Indianapolis Colts in 2006. Today it still remains the longest field goal in Titans history. The team released him in March after nine seasons.

Bironas leaves behind his wife Rachel Bradshaw, daughter of Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw, they were married in June.
