Former Independence football standout Nate Johnson has been officially dismissed from the University of Michigan football team.

Johnson, 19, allegedly assaulted a female student on September 30, when campus authorities arrested him, according to ESPN.com. The team suspended him for 12 hours immediately after his arrest, and confirmed his official removal from the team Tuesday.

Legally, Johnson faces one count of domestic assault against the victim,  whom he reportedly was dating. The incident took place at 600 E. Madison in Ann Arbor, where the South Quad dormitory is located

Johnson, who was a star wide-receiver and 4-star recruit for the Independence Eagles 2015-16 undefeated state-championship season, spent last season as a wide-receiver for the Wolverines. Not getting any playing time, he switched to cornerback this season. He had not yet played in a game.

Johnson was arraigned Sunday, Oct. 1, on one count of misdemeanor domestic violence, which is punishable by 93 days in jail and/or a $500 fine.

Johnson, who told the magistrate he only had $90 in the bank, was appointed a public defender, according to records.

He was jailed after being arrested, then released on a $5,000 personal recognizance bond by the magistrate.

The terms of his bond state that Johnson is only to be on campus for class and other official university activities, records indicate.
