Pet Owners: Do You Know What’s In Your Pet’s Flea Medication?

That synthetic solution you use to prevent your dog or cat from getting fleas and ticks can sometimes cause illness instead. Pyrethrin and pyrethroid are insecticides usually used for treating flea and tick infestations. Pyrethrins come from the Chrysanthemum cinerariaefolium plant, and from pyrethrum-related plant species. Pyrethroids are similar, but longer lasting and are synthetic rather than naturally based. A natural alternative for synthetic flea and tick solutions, called Wondercide, was featured on “Shark Tank” in 2016 and has continued to gain popularity for its effectiveness.

Reactions to synthetic pesticides can vary, with symptoms that can include vomiting and diarrhea, depression, excessive salivation, itching and congestion. In addition, these reactions occur more often in old, young, small or sick dogs, along with debilitated animals.

However, in 2009, Stephanie Boone of Austin, TX developed a natural alternative to chemicals to treat fleas and ticks on pets, called Wondercide, after her dog suffered from pesticide poisoning. As Founder and CEO, Boone and her Chief Marketing Officer, Laura Alter, appeared on “Shark Tank,” with plans to expand Wondercide’s business.

As Boone told the Austin Business Journal, an increasing number of people consider their pets as part of their family, and the goal of her company is, “to eliminate all synthetic pesticide exposure for families and their pets.”

Wondercide, which is sold locally at Three Dog Bakery , is an all-natural product made in the United States. However, unlike most natural products, which contain a high percentage of water, Wondercide contains no water. Wondercide’s Flea and Tick product consists of all active (cedar oil) and inert (hydrated silica or ethyl lactate) ingredients and does not contain water — thereby making it more effective. They both kill and repel fleas and ticks.

“I use Wondercide in combination with Advantage for my dog,” says Three Dog Bakery co-owner, Leslie Kessinger. “That way, the fleas and ticks are repelled before they have a chance to bite.” Three Dog Bakery carries all three scents –  Cedar, Rosemary and Cedar & Lemongrass, in various sizes.

Wondercide has experienced triple digit growth, year-over-year, for the past seven years, and now, “Shark Tank’s” Lori Greiner is an investor. Currently, Wondercide offers 30 natural products for pets, people and property through its Natural Flea & Tick Control, Natural Pest Control and All Natural Pet Products.
