FedEx Cup Playoffs Update

As the PGA Tour Championship tees off tomorrow at Eastlake, we sat down with a group of PGA professionals at Westhaven Golf Club to handicap the remaining Top 30 FedEx Cup field and try to determine who are the front-runners to win the FedEx Cup, as well as the last remaining Ryder Cup selection that will be made for the US team by Captain Davis Love III soon.

The PGA Tour Championship This Weekend

Q:  Nashville’s own Brant Snedeker sits at 11 in the standings.  Do you see him making a move?

A:  {Rick} He’s already made the Ryder Cup team, so he can concentrate on trying to win the FedEx Cup.  {Chris} Mathematically, the only way Brant can win is to win the Tour Championship and essentially have each of the top five in the FedEx Cup standings finish out of the top five.  {Perry} There is definitely more pressure this week for many of the golfers, and Snedeker is one of them.

Q:  Who’s your odds-on favorite to win the FedEx Cup?

A:  {Chris} Rory is the best player in the world and he’s hitting a real stride with a win two weeks ago.  I’ll pick Rory.  {Perry}  Rory is definitely hot right now, and the most talented.  He can actually finish second at the Tour Championship and still have a chance to win the FedEx Cup.  {Rick} It’s been Dustin Johnson’s year.  He’s number one in the FedEx Cup standings, so if he wins this weekend he also wins the FedEx Cup automatically.  DJ is a great ball striker; he can definitely win it.

Q:  East Lake is hosting the Tour Championship.  Have you played it?  What stands out to you?

A:  {Perry} It was an old Bobby Jones golf course that had fallen into complete disrepair and now is beautiful.  {Rick} It’s a completely unique development, and a model we should use all across the Country.  {Chris} The East Lake Foundation was formed to purchase and renovate the course as a tribute to Bobby Jones, and it’s become an effort to revitalize the entire surrounding area in that part of Atlanta.

The Top Five in the FedEx Cup Standings

  1.   Dustin Johnson
  2.   Patrick Reed
  3.   Adam Scott
  4.   Jason Day
  5.   Paul Casey

The First Three Ryder Cup Captain’s Picks

US Ryder Cup Team Captain, David Love III, made three of his four captain’s picks earlier this week — selecting Ricky Fowler, Matt Kuchar, and JB Holmes.  One last spot remains to be made after this weekend’s PGA Tour Championship.

Q:  Last week you guys all thought Kuchar and Holmes were among the front-runners, but you thought Ricky Fowler might have been playing his way out of contention for the Ryder Cup team.  Are these good picks by Davis Love III?

A:  {Chris}  Golf needs big stars like Ricky and Rory, so it’s good for Ricky to be there.  {Perry}  It’ll be very interesting to see who ends up being the final pick, and whether Davis goes for age or experience.  {Rick}  The Ryder Cup Captain is typically looking for someone who fits with the rest of the team, is playing well right now, and perhaps has played well in big events before.

Next week, we’ll update the ultimate winners of the Tour Championship and the FedEx Cup, let you know who is likely to fill those final four Ryder Cup spots for the US team, and preview the Ryder Cup at Hazeltine later this month in Minnesota.
