Mt. Mitchell Memorial Day Weekend 2017
Myers Home
Sat, May 27 6:00 am

Mt. Mitchell is the highest mountain east of the Mississippi. It's in North Carolina just off the Blue Ridge Parkway east of Asheville. Leave Nashville either Friday after work or EARLY Saturday morning. Hike Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (Memorial Day) and drive home Monday evening. This will be a strenuous hike. Dog friendly. We'll start at the top (north) trailhead (Bowlens Creek) and hike south, reaching the summit of Mt. Mitchell about mid-day Sunday.  We'll have lunch at the State Park restaurant, then road-walk down toward the Blue Ridge Parkway, where we'll pick up the Mountain-to-Sea Trail at the bottom of this red backwards "J."  We'll camp somewhere along this trail Sunday night.  Monday we'll finish hiking back northward on the red trail to the Cane River Gap on NC Hwy 197, where we will have left a vehicle or two for the shuttle back to the beginning to pick up any other vehicles for the drive home Monday evening. Here's a good link for the first part of our hike.  If you want a good fright, check out the profile map on the left side of the page-- Black Crest Trail link
