Emergency Telecommunicator Receives Elite Certification

Williamson County Telecommunicator Jonathan Hopson recently achieved the Emergency Number Professional (ENP) Certification. He is 1 of 70 in the state of Tennessee to receive this certification and just the fifth in Williamson County to achieve this accomplishment.

Hopson has been a telecommunicator for more than nine years with the City of Franklin, Spring Hill, and now with the Williamson County Department of Emergency Communications. He stated, “Since starting in this profession, I’ve had the desire to grow in both knowledge and influence within the Emergency Communications environment. This study provided the opportunity to learn much more about emergency communications management, infrastructure, and technology.”

After a review of the certification process in 1992, the National Emergency Numbers Association (NENA) Executive Board approved the establishment of an ENP Certification Program. The certification serves as a way for emergency communications professionals to receive formal recognition for professional development, promote competence in the field, and establish a comprehensive body of knowledge for Emergency Number Professionals.

According to NENA, “By successfully completing the certification, participants:

  • Demonstrate a mastery of the comprehensive knowledge base required for emergency number program management.
  • Help raise industry standards and increase the respect and prestige of those involved in 9-1-1.
  • Confirm their commitment to the 9-1-1 profession by showing themselves to be a leader in public safety and pledging themselves to stay aware of current issues and developments in the field.”

The certification allows emergency communications professionals, like Hopson, to demonstrate their understanding of the field. The certification process includes the successful completion of the ENP Exam.

“Each and every day both citizens and responders need assistance in some way,” says Hopson,” and I try to help meet their needs. It comes in being the calming voice on the phone when someone is scared or providing instructions to the caller. I wanted to go through this process for my own knowledge and to also be able to share what I have learned with others.”
