Elementary Students Begin 28-Mile Trek Today

Today, 53 fourth graders begin a 28-mile walk through the historic Natchez Trace area in Williamson County.

These active youngsters hail from Moore Elementary and this trek is a 22-year tradition. The event, called “Walk to Wellness,” takes place over two days. By the end of day one, these elementary students will have covered 18 miles; the final 10 miles culminates on Tuesday, the 20th with a grand school-wide welcome home.

The students are led by veteran physical education teachers, chaperoned by parents, faculty and staff.

“We started this project years ago as a way to promote walking as the best form of exercise for better health and weight control,” said physical ed teacher John Parks.

The students have been training for this epic event for eight weeks. During that time, they recorded information about their experience in a journal.

This tradition is a rite of passage for Moore Elementary students, an opportunity to test their fitness and to bond with their peers. “This is a life-changing event for most students and one that they look forward to throughout their experience at Moore Elementary,” Parks said.
