Eagles End Championship Drought In Instant Classic

An emotionally-drained Jeremiah Oatsvall collapsed on the 8-yardline as his teammates rushed onto the field to celebrate Brentwood Academy’s first state championship since 2006. The Eagles used a late rally to force the overtime period, where they would top rival MBA 56-55 in double overtime on a cold night in Cookeville.

Offensive Firepower On Display Early

MBA would win the toss and elect to receive. It wouldn’t take long for the scoreboard to light up. The Big Red would use play action to take to the air and put themselves in scoring position. Mr. Football Ty Chandler would open the scoring with a 1-yard touchdown run. The Eagles would immediately respond with a 10-yard Jeremiah Oatsvall touchdown run. Chandler would score again, this time from 3 yards out, but BA would respond with a Camron IMG_2013Johnson 22-yard touchdown run. The game would enter the second quarter tied 14-14.

The second quarter would present more of the same, as Big Red quarterback Glenn Coleman would call his own number and run it in from 8 yards out. Again, the Eagles would respond, this time with the game’s first passing touchdown, as Oatsvall found Daniel Taylor for a 24 yard pitch and catch for the score. MBA would retake the lead with a 39 yard touchdown catch from Chandler, but the Eagles would respond yet again. Oatsvall would find Jack McDonald in the back of the endzone to knot the game at 28 all. The Eagles defense would force the game’s first punt and would use their two minute offense to set up a 34-yard Isaac Way field goal as the clock hit zero. Way’s field goal would give the Eagles their first lead of the game as the team’s hit the locker room, 31-28.

Late Eagle Rally Sets Up Overtime Excitement

The offenses would stagnate in the third quarter. The teams would trade turnovers deep in MBA territory. While the Eagles had the field position advantage, the Big Red would hold BA to a 24-yard Way field goal. MBA would reach the redzone, but would also be held out of the endzone and a Dean Cheevers field goal would make it 34-31 at the end of three.

Isaac Way would add another field goal, this one from 42 yards out, to push the Eagles lead back to six. However, on the ensuing kickoff, Ty Chandler would show his versatility and return the kick a Blue Cross Bowl record 99 yards to give the Big Red a 38-37 lead. MBA would turn away Brentwood Academy on a 4th down attempt. A sustained MBA drive would end with a Ty Chandler 2-yard touchdown run to give the Big Red a 45-37 lead. The Eagles took the field and reached 2-yard line with a minute left, where they would send in their power offense. Prince Momodu would leap over the MBA defense from the 2, before adding a 2-point conversion in the same manner to tie the game at 45. MBA would run out of time late and the teams would go to overtime.

The teams would trade field goals in the first overtime. In the second overtime, MBA would score first with a 10-yard pass from Coleman to Jake Evans to take the 55-48 lead. The Brentwood Academy offense would respond, as Oatsvall would score from 8 yards out on third down. The Eagles decided to go for the two-point conversion and the IMG_2041win. Oatsvall would roll to the right and find Camron Johnson in the front corner of the endzone to give the Eagles the victory.

Brentwood Academy and MBA would combine to break three Blue Cross Bowl records, including most combined points (111) and most combined yards (1,047) in a game. Jeremiah Oatsvall won the offensive player of the game, going 17 for 29 passing with 280 yards and 2 touchdowns and adding 159 yards rushing and 2 touchdowns. Both Camron Johnson and Daniel Taylor had 100 yard receiving games to help the Eagles outduel Ty Chandler, who had 464 all-purpose yards and 5 touchdowns.

This win gave Brentwood Academy their 11th state championship in school history, their first since 2006. The Eagles will look to replace their offensive line, who graduates all five starters. However, Coach Cody White returns much of his skill talent, including Oatsvall, Johnson, and Taylor. With Chandler returning as well, the rivalry between these two talented teams looks to be an early favorite for next year’s Division II-AA Blue Cross Bowl.
