The University of Tennessee announced Tuesday morning they will introduce Donnie Tyndall as the new coach of the Volunteers’ men’s basketball team. A news conference is slated for 1 p.m.

Tyndall, 43, previously was the coach at Southern Miss, and will be Tennessee’s 19th basketball coach. He was an assistant coach at MTSU from 2002-2006.

The Volunteers’ wasted no time in finding a replacement for former coach Cuonzo Martin, after leaving the program to head west and take the position at University of California, Berkeley.

Tennessee brings in Tyndall who went 56-17 in two seasons with the Golden Eagles. The 2013-14 season ended with a school-record 29 wins, an undefeated 15-0 home record and sharing part of the Conference USA championship.

His all-time record stands at 170-102 (.625) and coached Morehead State for six seasons. During that time, Tyndall led the Eagles to two NCAA Tournament appearances in 2009 and 2011.

Tennessee last season was awarded the 11th seed of the NCAA Tournament in the Midwest Regional. After beating Massachusetts and Mercer, the Vols lost in the Sweet Sixteen to 2nd seed Michigan Wolverines 73-71.
