Division II Basketball Championships Preview

As the basketball season wraps up, we are only one week away from the Division II Blue Cross Championships for basketball. At the Division II level, local teams at both classifications are still in the hunt for the girls and boys levels.

Division II Class A

At the Class A level, the boys and girls for both FRA and BGA are in the Sub-State tournament this weekend. FRA’s boys won the District 2 championship, before finishing as East/Middle Regional runner-up to Knoxville Webb. The Lady Panthers finished as runners-up in both the district and regional championships to Ezell-Harding. The BGA boys finished third in District 2 and fourth in the East/Middle Region. The Lady Wildcats likewise took home third in the district and fourth in the region this season.

In Division II Class A, this weekend’s results set up the championship tournament for next weekend. Winners in this weekend’s Sub-State games face off next Thursday at Allen Arena in the semi-finals.

Division II Class AA

With so few teams at the AA level, the seeds of the East/Middle and West regionals by the regular season standings. The #7 East/Middle Father Ryan boys faced #4 East/Middle Pope John Paul II in the opening round Tuesday, falling to their Bishop Cup rivals 47-46 to wrap up the Irish boys’ season. On the girls’ side, the #4 seed Lady Irish topped #7 Girls Preparatory 57-26 to advance to a quarterfinals contest at the Baylor School. The BA boys and girls both wrapped up their respective number one seeds. The Eagle boys host Briarcrest in the quarterfinals, while the Lady Eagles host Hutchison in the quarterfinals.

For the boys, if the Eagles top the Saints, BA will face the winner of McCallie and Memphis University School in the semifinals of the state tournament. On the ladies side, a Lady Eagles win sets up a semifinal meeting with the winner of Harpeth Hall and Briarcrest. If the Father Ryan girls top Baylor, the Lady Irish will face the winner of Ensworth-St. Benedict in the semifinals. The semifinal contests will take place Friday at Allen Arena in Nashville.
