Summit quarterback Destin Wade came up huge with the Spartans’ season on the line, but Summit came up just short in a 45-42, triple-overtime playoff loss at Beech on Friday.
With the game tied, Summit’s defense got a stop in triple overtime, forcing a Cory Edwards field goal for the Buccaneers. But the Spartans lost a fumble on the first play of their drive to end the game.
Wade was 16 of 25 passing for 261 yards and three touchdowns, and ran 15 times for 37 yards and two more scores.
SHS finished its season 6-5. Beech (8-3) advances to play at Page (10-1) next Friday.
Wade accounted for two fourth-quarter touchdowns with Liam Akin’s extra points tying the game. The first came on a 2-yard run, the second, a 19-yard pass to George Odimegwu, with 33 seconds left.
The Spartans then held on for dear life after Beech drove to the Summit 16, then, missed a 33-yard field goal on the last play of regulation.
After a holding penalty on the first play of overtime hampered Summit, Wade found Tre Hunter for 19 yards to the Beech 2. Wade ran in from third down from there as the Spartans took their first lead of the night.
But Beech’s Aaron Fox scored on a fourth-and-goal play from the 1, with Edwards’s point-after tying the game at 35.
Back came Summit, with Wade hitting Brayden Stem for a touchdown in the second overtime.
Beech again answered when Fox caught a touchdown to tie. Odimegwu, who caught eight balls for 120 yards and ran seven times for 26, lost a fumble on Summit’s first play of its triple-overtime possession.
The score was tied at 14 at half. Destin Wade hit Odimegwu with a 29-yard scoring toss, and Keaton Wade had a 20-yard scoring run, with Akin converting both extra points.
