Week 1 was an eventful one for high school football in and around Williamson County. We pick our weekly standouts from the defensive side of the ball.
5. C.J. Grissim, Sr., linebacker, Brentwood
Last year’s District Defensive Player of the Year helped Brentwood start its season with a bang in a 14-10 win over Franklin. The Bruins held the Rebels, who scored under 21 points just once last year, to just 237 yards on Friday. Grissim had eight total tackles, with two solo, on Friday. Here are some video highlights of Grissim’s evening.
4. Conner Mitchell, Sr., Battle Ground Academy
Mitchell, an all-region pick last year, started 2017 with a bang. The senior registered 10 solo tackles and two assists, as BGA beat Forrest, 48-19, in its season opener. The Lions allowed just 240 total yards, and seven of the points that the team allowed were on the BGA offense, which fumbled in its own end zone.
3. Austin Chaffin, Sr., linebacker, Brentwood
Chaffin was huge in the Bruins’ 14-10 victory over Franklin. He amassed one solo stop, four assists and an eye-popping four stops for loss. Franklin, which scored 21 points or more in all but one of its 13 games last year, was held to 237 yards on Friday. Here are video highlights of Chaffin’s evening.
2. Tanner Antonutti, Sr., defensive line, Ensworth
Tanner Antonutti came up big in Ensworth’s 35-0 blanking of Lipscomb Academy. The senior had five tackles, 3.5 stops for minus-10 yards, and a sack on Friday. Antonutti, who also plays tight end on offense, is committed to play football at Tennessee.
1. Michael Burdick, Jr., defensive back, Page
Michael Burdick was the hero for Page in its 28-14 win over Fairview in the Battle of 840. The junior defensive back had 10 tackles and three interceptions, two of which he returned for touchdowns of 88 and 33 yards. Page’s do-it-all-star accounted for 277 all-purpose yards if you include punt and kickoff returns, too. Here is video of Burdick’s all-around outstanding evening.
